Hi, my name is Jessica and I run T1dactiveliving.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, meaning that it occurs when a person’s immune system accidentally kills off the cells in their pancreas that secrete a hormone called insulin. Insulin regulates the amount of glucose present in a person’s blood stream.

People with Type 1 diabetes need to take daily injections of synthetic insulin in order to survive.

There is no cure for type 1 diabetes. It is not reversible. It is not caused by an unhealthy lifestyle, being overweight or from eating too much sugar. There is no way to prevent or stop type 1 diabetes.  

I was extremely active and healthy prior to my diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in 2012. And what followed was a series of other health challenges and some of the darkest days of my life.

Living with diabetes isn’t easy. Neither is dealing with the stereotypes and many misconceptions about the disease.

I’m here to document my fitness journey.

This site is proof positive that no disease can slow down someone with determination, surrounded by inspiration.

My hope is that others in my position will also have the courage to speak openly about their story. Show the world that any athletic achievement is possible with type 1 diabetes or whatever health challenge you face.

I want to talk about the said and unsaid about diabetes. I strongly believe the more we talk openly it, the better off we will be. I want to dispel myths, educate others and find peace.

      I’ve been following this routine since the summer. I added in the dance element in September though as that’s when the semester starts.

    I’m sure that you’ll do well living with it – even if it is a pain in the arse. Your active lifestyle will help you – both your blood and your mental health.
